Re-Architecting Novartis's Core Systems for Regulatory-Ready Sales Reporting and Supply Chain Automation
Key challenges
Migrating the legacy AS/400 system to SAP required extensive sales and marketing reporting capabilities to be preserved and rebuilt within the new system — a significant technical undertaking given the volume of historical data, reporting dependencies, and business rules embedded in the legacy environment. Simultaneously, the new SAP system had to be integrated with external sales and distribution systems without disrupting live operations that Novartis's global commercial functions depended on every day. Any gap in reporting continuity during the migration carried direct regulatory and commercial risk.
Managing multiple IBM systems to ensure smooth functioning of the master system introduced coordination complexity at every layer of the integration architecture. Novartis's existing point-to-point integrations had accumulated over years of system additions — creating a fragile, tightly coupled environment where a change in one system risked cascading failures across others. Converting this architecture into a modularized, loosely coupled integration model capable of supporting Novartis's enterprise-wide operations at scale required not just technical re-engineering but a fundamental rethinking of how systems across the organization communicated with each other.
Enabling accurate and timely reporting of all sales and distribution activities to the FDA was a non-negotiable regulatory requirement — one that left no room for delays, data gaps, or reconciliation errors across Novartis's sales and distribution network. Beyond regulatory compliance, the integrated system also needed to give customers real-time visibility into orders and invoices — a capability that required the new architecture to support live data exchange across the full order management lifecycle, from placement through to fulfillment and billing, without latency or data inconsistency across systems.
